Mermaids is lyrical documentary exploration of the allure and transformative power of the universal myth. The film transports us into another world that only a few sailors and dreamers past have been lucky enough to witness: the world of real, live mermaids.

For as long as we can remember, we have been enchanted by legends of women of the deep. From the three-thousand-year-old Assyrian figure of Atargatis to the Mami Wata water spirits of West Africa to the naiads and sirens of Ancient Greece, mermaids have long been the objects of our collective human obsession. Yet, today, with help from the internet, a new mer-craze is brewing around North America and beyond.

Guiding us through these fabled waters are several women, who share one unifying characteristic: they are each mysteriously yet indisputably real mermaids. We get to know these women, each as complex and captivating as the archetypes they embody. They take us on a voyage across the ever more popular mermaid schools, meet ups, and conventions around the world, and deep into ancient lore where the mermaid has long played the role of both fertility goddess and man-eating seductress. Allowing us into their daily lives both in and out of the ocean, these sirens help us explore some of the questions of seduction, beauty and escape that are inherent in the myth. And, as they beckon us further into their underwater worlds, we begin to understand what it is that has lured them there in the first place...

At its heart, Mermaids is a film about our common human fascination with water, femininity, and a yearning to transform into our innermost pictures of ourselves.
